Following a string of suicides and attempted suicides at France Telecom, the French government has entered the fray to try to halt the devastating trend.

자살과 자살 시도가 프랑스 텔레콤 직원들 사이에서 계속되자 이 끔찍한 유행을 멈추기 위해 프랑스 정부가 나섰다.

According to labour unions, since the beginning of 2008 there have been 22 suicides and 13 attempted suicides of staff.

노동조합에 따르면 2008년 초 이래 프랑스텔레콤 직원 22명이 자살했고 13명이 자살을 기도했다.

The firm employs just over 100,000 people in France.France's Labour Minister Xavier Darcos held talks with the company's chief executive Didier Lombard following news that a middle manager had taken an overdose of barbiturates during her lunch break.Luckily, this time it was caught early enough and her stomach was pumped at a nearby hospital. .

The spate of self-induced deaths has sparked a nationwide debate about working conditions at the former state utility, of which the government is still the largest shareholder.

자살이 잇따르자 여전히 정부가 최대주주인 옛 국영기업의 근무 여건을 두고 전국적으로 논란이 일었다.

Darcos says immediate measures are being taken to help employees dealing with undue stress.

하비에 다르코 노동부 장관은 스트레스를 받고 있는 직원들을 돕기 위한 대책이 신속히 이뤄지고 있다고 말했다.

The union, which had openly called for the government to get involved, welcomed the news but said that more must be done.

정부 개입이 필요하다고 공개적으로 요청해 온 노조는 이 같은 발표를 환영하면서도 더 많은 조치가 이뤄져야 한다고 말했다.

The unions blame chronic restructuring and work pressure at France Telecom for the wave of suicides, saying that some staffers fear being left behind in the firm's transformation from a staid government agency to a more competitive private company.Matt Cowan, Reuters.

노조는 프랑스텔레콤에서 자살이 잇따르는 원인이 장기적인 구조조정과 근무 스트레스라고 지적했다. 안정적인 공기업에서 경쟁이 치열한 민간기업으로 변해과는 과정에서 일부 직원들이 낙오될 지 모른다는 두려움을 느끼고 있다는 설명이다.
